Sustainability at Agnus Unawatuna

Agnus is a small, 10-room boutique hotel on the Rumassala hillside. We aim to reduce the environmental impact of our operations through practical measures that suit the hotel, its garden and our local setting.

Our current measures include generating approximately half of our energy through solar power, recycling wastewater for the garden, removing plastic from guest-facing service, reducing single-use plastic across the operation, limiting paper use and introducing electric transport for suitable beach shuttle journeys.

Solar power

Approximately 50% of the hotel's energy use is supported by electricity generated through our own solar power system. The system is connected to the national grid: the electricity we generate is supplied to the grid, and power is purchased back as required.

Wastewater recycled for the garden

All wastewater from hotel operations is recycled and reused in the garden. This helps us reduce the demand for fresh water for garden irrigation.

Reducing plastic

We have removed plastic from the guest-facing side of the hotel. Across the wider operation, we estimate that single-use plastic has been reduced by approximately 90%.

A small amount remains where suitable alternatives are not yet practical, or where hygiene, safety or supplier packaging requires it. We continue to look for responsible replacements.

Paperless wherever practical

We use digital systems and communications wherever practical to reduce printing and paper consumption. Paper is used only when operational, legal or guest requirements make it necessary.

Electric beach transport

Our beach shuttle fleet includes one locally made electric tuk-tuk and one petrol tuk-tuk. The electric tuk-tuk helps reduce fuel use on suitable beach journeys, while the petrol vehicle remains part of the operational fleet.

An ongoing commitment

These measures do not make Agnus a zero-impact hotel. They represent practical changes we have already made and an ongoing commitment to reduce energy, water, plastic, paper and fuel use wherever responsibly possible.
